An extreme flood alert has been sounded at the national capital as Yamuna level breached an all time high. The water level in Yamuna breached the mark of 208.05 metres marking it as an extreme situation for Delhi as flood water entered the national capital’s ITO. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the central government to intervene and ascertain that the water released from Haryana’s Hathnikund barrage is slowed. According to reports, Yamuna’s water level is now at an all-time high.
Reports further claim that the areas around Monastery Market, Yamuna Bazar, Garhi Mandu, Geeta Ghat, Vishwakarma Colony, Khadda Colony, Neeli Chatri temple near Old Railway Bridge, Neem Karoli Gaushala and a stretch of Ring Road from Wazirabad to Majnu Ka Tila are now flooded. The rapid rise in Yamuna water level compelled the Delhi Police to ban gatherings at the flood-prone areas.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Traffic Police asserted that the traffic movement is affected on Ring Road owing to the overflow of sewer water near IP flyover from Rajghat to Nizamuddin carriage way. The traffic police asked the commuters to take an alternative route through Shanti Van, Rajghat, JLN Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg to avoid the stretch.
Speaking on the adverse situation, Delhi Chief Minister tweeted on Thursday stating that the water level of Yamuna is increasing continuously and the water has now breached 208.46m. He added that people are being evacuated from the populated areas that are flooded. He also urged the people living near the area to cooperate with the administration.
The Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant (WTP) that supplies drinking water to large parts of Delhi has been closed owing to the flood condition. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will visit the area at 11:30 am on Thursday. The Chief Minister also announced that all government schools and private schools in the national capital will remain closed.
Furthermore, the Geeta Colony crematorium, near the Yamuna River, has also been shut down. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has requested the citizens to utilize Karkarduma and Ghazipur cremation grounds instead. As far as reports are concerned more than 1500 people have been evacuated from the low lying areas on the ground in extreme flood situations that may arise.
