An autorickshaw driver has been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering a 16-year-old girl. The driver reportedly dumped the body of the minor girl in the Digaru river in Assam’s Kamrup district. The police found her body from the river on Friday. The autorickshaw driver has been identified as Bablu Tumung. He has been taken into the police custody.
According to reports, the girl had gone missing on June 26, after she went to a nearby shop to recharge her mobile phone. During the investigation carried out by the police team, the accused confessed to the crime. The police are also conducting further investigation into the matter. The incident has sparked a row in the area, with the locals protesting at the Sonapur police station on Sunday. The protestors demanded stringent punishment for the accused.
Earlier in May, four youths were arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl inside a car in Assam’s Kokrajhar district. Nur Islam Sarkar, a senior police officer who was investigating the case said that a patrolling police party intercepted a car and brought the youths and the girl to the police station after they were found suspicious during interrogation. The senior police official added that the minor girl in her statement claimed that the youths had raped her inside the car.
As per report, the victim was known to one of the accused. They both came in contact with each other through Instagram, a couple of months before the incident took place. On the day of the incident, the youth came to meet her from Dhubri with his friends and they allegedly raped her. After a medical examination of the girl, the doctors affirmed that the health of the girl is stable and fine. The youth in this case had been sent to a three-day police custody.
