Bihar bridge collapse: Body of missing security guard found 10 days after the incident

The body of the missing security guard is found in Kauwakol block, ten days after the four-lane Sultanganj-Aguwani Ghat bridge collapse, which was being built across the Ganga in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, according to an official. The body was found in the flood plain of the Kauwakol block by workers clearing the remains of the collapsed bridge, the official reported.

The deceased security guard has been identified as Vibhash Kumar, a guard for the Haryana-based private company building the bridge. When the Sultanganj-Aguwani Ghat bridge collapsed on June 4, Kumar was deployed on pillar number 10 and was reported missing since that day.

the station house officer (SHO) of the Parbata Police Station Dharmendra Kumar said, Vibhash Kumar’s family members were contacted immediately after the body was found on Tuesday. Ramvilasa Yadav, his uncle, and other family members recognised Kumar’s body. The body was later on sent for post-mortem examination.

Kumar died when the bridge collapsed, and the water currents carried his body away. On June 4, a portion of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge, which was still being constructed across the Ganga River, collapsed. The purpose of building this bridge was to link Bhagalpur with Khagaria.

A day after the bridge collapse Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, announced stern action against anyone found guilty for that incident.

The CM also said, the same bridge collapsed twice since April 2022 because of improper construction. The Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and the department head for road development, Tejashwi Yadav said shortly after the tragedy, that the state government had already decided to demolish the bridge due to structural problems.

Tejashvi Yadav said, on April 30 of last year, a section of this bridge had fallen. In order to start a study, we then approached IIT-Roorkee, which is known for its knowledge of construction-related issues. Although the final report has not yet been released, experts who have evaluated the structure have told us that it contains severe flaws.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam has already sent a show cause notice to the Haryana-based company that received the contract, seeking a response within 15 days of the incident. The executive engineer who raised concerns about his failure to monitor the quality of the work was also suspended by the department.
