There are around 4 lakh government employees and around 3.5 lakh pensioners in Bihar, who will get the benefit of the state government’s decision.
The date on which Eid al-Adha or Bakrid is celebrated is decided according to the lunar calendar every year and the month is known as Dhu al-Hijjah. In India, Eid al-Adha 2023 is expected to start on the evening of June 28.
It is an Islamic festival celebrated across the world. Bakrid is also known as the festival of sacrifice. The story behind the observance of the festival is that on this day, Prophet Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice his son Ismail to obey Allah’s command. The Almighty was impressed by the Prophet’s steadfastness that a lamb replaced his son Ismail for the slaughter. Since then Bakrid is celebrated every year and Prophet Ibrahim’s gesture of being ready to do anything to keep his word to God is remembered.
The festival is observed by many Muslim families by slaughtering goats or sheep in honour of Ibrahim’s faith in God. The meat is used to cook many delicacies which is shared with relatives and friends. Animal rights groups have been voicing their concern over the practice calling it medieval and not modern.
