BSP supremo Mayawati supports Uniform Civil Code but says not the way BJP wants

Bahujan Samajwadi Party supremo Mayawati extended support to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code saying it would strengthen country and unite the people of India but she do not accept the manner BJP wants to implement politicising the matter.

Mayawati in a presser said her party is not against the implementation but do not support the way BJP is trying to bring it as a law by politicising the issue and implementing it forcefully, which is not a right thing to do.

She added, the UCC will help in strengthening and uniting the country and would develop the feeling of brotherhood among the people.

Slamming the BJP ruled Centre, Mayawati said politicising UCC will invite problems and said the government should work on issues such as inflation, unemployment, education and healthcare.

BSP becomes the third opposition party in the list backing the UCC move after Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena (UBT) announced their stand supporting the common law.

The UCC is a law which aims to bring a uniform or equal law in the country, which once enforced as a law, would treat all the people equally irrespective of their religion, sex, gender or sexual orientation. The law once in effect, will cease the current personal laws which includes matters such as Marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, adoption and succession of the property.

It was one of the top promises included in the BJP’s 2019 Lok Sabha election manifesto.

Meanwhile, several Opposition parties have voiced against the BJP’s push to enforce UCC as a law in the country.

Yesterday, the Congress held a key meeting of the Parliamentary Strategy Group chaired by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi at her residence in Delhi reportedly to discuss its strategies on the UCC, which is going to be discussed in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law and Justice on July 3.
