Caught on cam: Heavy rain washes away a section of Jammu-Srinagar national highway

Jammu-Srinagar national highway

Jammu-Srinagar national highway connecting T3 and T5 has been washed away by heavy rainfall on Saturday. According to reports, the Jammu Srinagar national highway is currently inaccessible at Mehar, Cafeteria Morh, T1, T2 (Keela Mord & Sita Ram pass) and Panthyal owing to roadblocks. Furthermore, incessant rains have caused damage to a section of road that leads to T5 Panthyal tunnel.

Taking to Twitter, Mohit Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police stated that the road connecting T3 and T5, which bypasses Panthyal tunnel has been washed away. He added that the remaining portion of the road has also caved in and the national highway will remain closed for further clearance.

The video of the national highway crumbling and being washed away due to heavy rain has gone viral on social media platforms. The video shows a section of Jammu-Srinagar national highway caving in and being washed away by heavy rain. Many social media users questioned that if everything was put in place in August 2019, then why not the highway.

Another social media user commented that the topography and the soil conditions of the highway are different. He added that the authorities adopted an unscientific way to construct it. He further explained that such activities alter the pressure under the slope resulting in instability which in turn causes landslides.

According to reports, Amarnath Yatra has been suspended for the consecutive second day due to adverse weather conditions in Jammu and Kashmir. The pilgrims were not allowed to proceed from Jammu for the yatra due to the shutdown of Jammu-Srinagar national highway. The Amarnath Yatra was suspended on Friday on the grounds of widespread rain, especially across the traditional 48-kilometre Pahalgam route in Anantnag district as well as the 14-kilometer Baltal route in Ganderbal district.
