Gita Press, Gorakhpur to get Gandhi Peace Prize 2021

The Gandhi Peace Prize 2021 will be conferred on Gita Press, Gorakhpur, in recognition of its outstanding contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violent and other Gandhian methods. The aforesaid announcement was made through an official statement. 

A statement issued by the Ministry of Culture stated that the jury led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi unanimously decided to select Gita Press, Gorakhpur as the recipient of Gandhi Peace Prize. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the contribution of Geeta Press in upholding the Gandhian ideals of peace and social harmony. He further noted that the conferment of the Gandhi Peace Prize on Gita Press, on its completion of hundred years of its establishment, is a recognition to the work done by the institution in community service, the statement elaborated. 

Gita Press which is established in 1923, is considered as one of the world’s largest publishers. It has published 41.7 crore books in 14 languages, including  16.21 crore Shrimad Bhagvad Gita. The statement cited that the institution has never relied on advertisement in its publication in the view of revenue generation. 

As far as reports are concerned, the Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual award instituted by the government in the year 1995. This was introduced on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as a tribute to the ideals espoused by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. 

Reports claim that the award is open to all persons regardless of nationality, race, language, caste, creed or gender. The award carries an amount of Rs 1 crore, together with a citation, a plaque and an exquisite traditional handicraft or handloom item, according to the statement issued by the Ministry of Culture.

Recent awardees to the Gandhi Peace Prize includes Sultan Qaboos Bin Said Al Said, Oman (2019) and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (2020), Bangladesh.
