The Indian Army on Thursday affirmed that armed rioters opened fire near Manipur’s Haraothel village earlier in the morning. The army added that multiple troops have been deployed in the area in an attempt to bring the situation under control. The officials further noted that some casualties were reported in the clash in the violence-hit Kangpokpi district of the state.
The Indian Army’s Spears Corps mentioned in a statement that the security forces responded to the firing in a calibrated manner to avert any collateral damage. It added that while the forces managed to get the firing stopped, unconfirmed reports indicate some casualties. The statement further noted that the firing commenced at 5:30 am on Thursday.
Reports claim that troops from the Army were quickly mobilized in response and further additional forces were moved to the area to bring the situation under control. The army asserted that large crowds were also reported to have been formed in the area and the situation was being supervised closely.
As far as reports are concerned, over 100 people have lost their lives in these ethnic clashes which broke out between Manipur’s Meitei and Kuki communities. Clashes between these ethnic groups first broke out on May 3 following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ which was organized in the northeastern state’s hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
In a bid to restore peace and law and order in the crisis-hit state, the Indian Army stationed nearly 10,000 paramilitary forces and troops. Furthermore, a retired Chief Justice headed panel will be looking into the situation and under the Governor and security advisor Kuldeep Singh, a peace committee will also be constituted along with the members of civil society. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also investigating the matter to find out whether the conflict was part of some conspiracy.
