Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge demanded PM Narendra Modi’s statement on the Manipur shocking incident that took place more than 2 months ago. In this horrific incident, 2 Kuki women were paraded naked on the street and allegedly gang-raped by a mob.
The video clip of the incident has been shared widely on the internet, after which several prominent leaders have strongly criticised the Modi-led government for their incompetence in bringing the situation to normalcy in Manipur.
In a scathing attack, Congress chief Kharge accused the BJP of turning democracy and the rule of law into mobocracy in the violence-hit northeastern state.
The Congress President said in a Tweet that humanity has died in Manipur. Modi government and the BJP have changed democracy and the rule of law into mobocracy by destroying the delicate social fabric of the state. He added Narendra Modi ji, India will never forgive your silence.
Kharge further added if there is any conscience or an iota of shame left in Modi’s government, then PM Modi should speak about Manipur in the Parliament and tell the nation what happened, without blaming others for BJP’s dual incompetence, both at the centre and the state. PM Modi has abdicated his constitutional responsibility. In this hour of crisis, Congress stands together with the people of Manipur.
The horrific incident, two women being paraded, has shocked the nation and has drawn widespread condemnation from opposition leaders. As per the tribal organisation in Manipur, the two women were gang-raped in a field as well.
According to reports, the incident occurred on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, which is 35 kilometres from the state capital of Imphal.
After two months of the horrific incident, the Manipur police has arrested the main accused.
PM’s silence and inaction has led Manipur into anarchy. India will not stay silent while the idea of India is being attacked in Manipur. We stand with the people of Manipur. Peace is the only way forward, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet.
The horrific video of sexual assault of two women emanating from Manipur is condemnable and downright inhuman. Spoke to CM N Biren Singh ji who has informed me that investigation is currently underway and assured that no effort will be spared to bring perpetrators to justice, BJP MP Smriti Irani said.
Meanwhile, after strong criticism from the Congress and other opposition leaders and celebrities, PM Modi has broken his silence on the Manipur violence.
PM Modi said the incident of women being paraded naked in Manipur has shamed 135 crore Indians, asserting that the law will act with its full might and no guilt will be spared.
