Manipur: House of the man who showcased naked woman, set on fire

On Friday, miscreants set fire to the home of the main culprit, two days after a video of two women being paraded naked by a mob in Manipur went viral.

In the Kangpokpi area of Manipur, the video showed women from one of the feuding clans being paraded naked by a mob from the opposing side.

The incident, which took place in a village in the Kangpokpi region, happened on May 4, one day after ethnic unrest broke out in the northeastern state. However, the horrifying video didn’t go viral until Wednesday, when the internet ban was removed.

The video sparked an uproar across the country shortly after it went viral.

The Manipur Police registered a complaint of kidnapping, gangrape, and murder against unidentified persons at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district on Wednesday night after taking suo moto notice of the video.

According to government reports, four persons have been detained in connection with the event.

The event is being thoroughly investigated, according to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who also promised harsh measures, possibly including the death penalty, would follow.

Since May 3, when a Tribal Solidarity March was held in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, more than 150 people have been killed and several others have been injured as a result of ethnic violence in Manipur.

The Meiteis make up around 53% of the state’s population and are primarily concentrated in the Imphal Valley, while the tribal population, which includes the Nagas and Kukis, makes up 40% and is mainly concentrated in the hill regions.

Jairam Ramesh, the communications director for the Congress party, tweeted that the Prime Minister’s comments was too little, too late.

The Prime Minister finally spoke on Manipur for a total of 30 seconds. He has made no appeal for peace, nor has he asked the Chief Minister of Manipur to resign, Ramesh tweeted. He also said after more than 1,800 hours of an inexplicable and unforgivable silence.
