A 12-year-old girl was sold to a young man for Rs 40,000 by her parents. The minor girl’s parents received an advance payment of Rs 20,000 and the remaining amount was to be handed over to them after the wedding. The incident took place in Gunaga village near Bhopal as per the reports.
Police reached the spot after receiving the information about the incident from women and child welfare department officials on Monday. According to the police, five people have been arrested so far in this case. The arrests were made after the intervention of the women and child welfare department. The accused have been arrested for abetting child marriage and human trafficking.
When police reached the spot and saw that the Haldi ceremony was taking place. After inquiry, it was found that the girl was 12 years old and the person whom she was getting married to was 27 years old, said Kiranlata Kerketta, Superintendent of Police, Bhopal.
The police officer further added the marriage of a 12-year-old tribal girl with a 27-year-old man which was fixed by their parents was prevented by the women and child welfare department officials in a village under Gunaga police station limits near Bhopal.
A 12-year-old girl told police that her parents had fixed her marriage for Rs 40,000 even after she refused the marriage proposal, said SP Kerketta.
The officer added that a case was registered against five persons so far, the bride-groom, including the parents of the minor girl, and the parents of the groom under different Article of the constitution the Human Trafficking, Juvenile Justice Act, Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, SC/ST Act. Police said all these accused have been arrested in this case.
Police said, further investigation into the case had underway, the police official added the cases would also be lodged against those who worked as brokers between the two parties if they were found to be involved in the case.
