Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader V Senthil Balaji, cried while being taken to a hospital by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday morning for a medical examination. The minister was detained in relation to an alleged case of money laundering.
In relation to the investigation, the ED conducted a raid on Balaji’s property on Tuesday. The ED picked up Balaji for interrogation after the raids.
The ED took Balaji to the Omandurar government hospital in Chennai today for a medical examination. The minister created a high drama in front of the hospital. While being taken to the hospital in an ambulance, the DMK leader was seen crying inside the vehicle as his followers stood outside, screaming at the investigation agency.
Balaji has been sent to the hospital’s intensive care unit, according to DMK MP and lawyer NR Elango, who also added that the ED has not yet acknowledged the arrest. The rules for arrest have not been followed, he claimed.
I saw Balaji’s transfer to the intensive care unit. His health is currently being assessed by doctors. When someone claims to have been assaulted, it is protocol for the doctor to list all of the injuries and determine what happened after reviewing the report. Officially, the ED has not informed us that he has been detained, Elango continued.
Income Tax (IT) officials recently searched Balaji’s associates’ residences across the state. This came after the Supreme Court authorised the ED to carry on its probe into charges of corruption against Balaji regarding positions held while he served as a minister under the Jayalalithaa government. The Supreme Court had also given the ED permission to continue looking into the alleged case of money laundering.
Following the BJP’s failure in one of the most recent Karnataka assembly elections, the ruling DMK said that the BJP had shifted its attention to the party in a panic.
The chief minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, criticised the BJP-led national government for the searches of Balaji and claimed, the party is using politics of intimidation.
The Tamil Nadu Secretariat, Balaji’s home, his office there, and the residences of his brother and a close aide in the Karur district were all raided by the ED on Tuesday. According to Chief Minister Stalin, the BJP’s politics of threatening their political rivals through backdoor tactics will not succeed. CM Stalin criticised the searches at the Secretariat.
