Protesting wrestlers to immerse medals in the Ganga at Haridwar today


On Monday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a key meeting in violence hit Manipur with Chief Minister N Biren Singh along with state ministers, leaders and senior officials to assess the security situation in the state.

The north-eastern state since May 3 has been witnessing clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

As the situation across the state remains critical, Home Minister Shah on Monday, arrived in the state for a four-day visit.

Shah is likely to hold a series of meetings today to further take cognizance of the situation and discuss on plan to bring back normalcy and peace in the state.

The Union Home Minister’s first visit to the state since the clashes broke out is being seen positive towards taking measures ensuring peace in Manipur.

On Wednesday afternoon, Shah is expected to convene a press meet announcing the actions initiated to curb the violence and bring back normalcy in the law and order situation of the state. On Thursday, Shah is expected to return back to Delhi.

The state has been witnessing ethnic clashes since May 3 and has claimed at-least 75 lives till now. On May 3, a clash broke out after a Tribal Solidarity March was organised in Manipur protesting the demand of Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Later, the violence was fuelled after some Kuki villagers were evicted from a reserve forest land.

Manipur CM Singh informed that Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel have been deployed in 38 vulnerable areas identified across the state. Singh said the CAPF forces have been deployed in order to prevent any unwanted situation.

On May 28, Singh also said around 40 terrorists were killed by the security forces in defensive operations.

The state on Saturday, also extended the ban on internet services till May 31.
