A case of theft has been reported in Karnataka’s Hassan district on Tuesday night, where tomatoes worth Rs 1.5 lakh were stolen from an agricultural field. The farmer name Somasekhar from the Goni Somanahalli village has been growing tomatoes on his farmland for the last 3 years.
As per the reports, on July 4th, thieves stole 50 kg of tomatoes from a total of 60 bags kept on farmer Somasekhar’s farm. The farmer said he lost Rs 1.5 lakh. Somasekhar’s son Dharani brought this incident to light and informed his father about the same. When Dharani entered the farm on Wednesday, he found that all 60 bags of tomatoes went missing from the farm.
The family has only two acres of agricultural land and could not harvest any crop due to heavy rainfall, climatic conditions, and disease, for the last three years, Somashekar’s wife Parvathamma said.
However, this year, they managed to grow tomatoes on two acres of land, but now half of the crop has been stolen. She added, the tomato plants were damaged, leaving no further yield for us to salvage.
According to Halebeedu police inspector, Shivana Gowda Patil, he said police reached the place of the incident soon after receiving the complaint from the family. Police have found some information about the theft after talking to villagers in this regard.
He added, the accused will be arrested soon. A police case has been registered under section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code and an investigation is underway.
The incident of theft came to light when tomato prices have been touching the sky across India. In some parts of the country, tomatoes are being sold for Rs 100-120 per kg. The reason could be a decline in production, unseasonal rains, and a rise in demand.
