Sonia Gandhi chairs Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group meeting at 10 Janpath to discuss Uniform Civil Code, President Kharge along other leaders take part


As the debate over the implementation of Uniform Civil Code(UCC) has ignited, a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group convened by former Congress President and United Progressive Alliance(UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi is underway at her residence at 10 Janpath in Delhi.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former president Rahul Gandhi and other leaders of the party Parliamentary Strategy Group are a part of the meeting.

The primary agenda of the meeting is to discuss and chalk out the strategies of the party in regards to the UCC, scheduled to be discussed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law and Justice on July 3.

In the meeting, the party is also slated to discuss the issues it will raise to taken on the Narendra Modi government in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament starting from July 20 till August 11, the announcement of which was made earlier today.

The grand old party will decide its plan of action to challenge the BJP government at the Centre, which is most likely to introduce UCC as a bill in the Parliament.

Meanwhile, on one side when most of the prominent like-minded opposition parties are throwing signals of an united voice against the BJP, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena(UBT) have expressed their support towards the proposal of UCC.

The Congress’s Minister in the Himachal Pradesh cabinet and state chief Pratibha Singh’s son Vikramaditya Singh has also supported the UCC in a contrast to his party’s stance on the matter.

The UCC is one of the top 5 promises made by the BJP in its 2019 election manifesto is yet to fulfilled and the party at the Centre seems pushing for its implementation for weeks now with political experts saying a card that is being played by the BJP keeping in focus the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Uniform Civil Code is a common law, which if brought, will bound all the people of the country to follow a common law sidelining their personal laws that would be irrespective of their religion, sex, gender or sexual orientation. The personal laws includes matters such as Marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, adoption and succession of the property.
