The Balasore accident site’s up and down railway tracks were repaired, as stated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Shortly afterwards, the first train movement on the section was observed on Sunday evening. The restoration process took 51 hours, and now the railway track is operational again following one of the most severe train accidents in the nation’s history.
In the presence of officials and a large workforce, he shared a video showcasing train movement on the railway tracks in Balasore. As the train travelled along the restored tracks, he and the officials could be seen bowing their heads in prayer.
On Friday at approximately 7 p.m., one of the most severe train accidents in India occurred in Balasore, Odisha. The accident involved collision of three trains, the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Superfast Express and a stationery train.
The Coromandel Express rammed into a cargo train, and many of its carriages overturned, including some onto another train, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, which was also passing by at the same time on Friday.
In this massive accident, 275 passengers were reported dead and over 900 injured.
The ruling party, BJP, is being targeted by the opposition following the significant accident, alleging government negligence as the cause. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of Bengal, criticized the absence of an anti-collision device, stating that its presence could have prevented the collision. Sharad Pawar, the chief of the NCP, called for the resignation of Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday, drawing a parallel to Lal Bahadur Shastri, who stepped down as a former railway minister after a train crash.
However, the Railway Minister dismissed these speculations on Friday evening, stating that it is not the appropriate time for engaging in political discussions.
In the meantime, the Central government announced a CBI investigation into the rail accident in Odisha on Sunday. The preliminary investigation conducted by the railways identified “interference” with the ‘electronic interlocking system’ and ‘points,’ which ensure the safe movement of trains, as the primary cause of the crash.
