Early on Friday morning, Jaipur and nearby areas experienced a series of three earthquakes within a 16-minute interval. The first earthquake occurred at 4:09 am, registering 4.4 on the Richter scale with a depth of 10 km, and was followed by a second one at 4:22 am, measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale with a depth of 5 km. The third earthquake struck at 4:25 am.
During the earthquakes, people reported hearing blast-like sounds, causing many to evacuate their apartments, single-storey, and double-storey houses. Some residents sought refuge in nearby parks. Hemant Chaudhary, a resident of Jhotwara, described the experience of feeling everything shaking and hearing the loud noise.
The sudden succession of earthquakes caught many off guard, with some not even noticing the first one until the second quake shook them out of bed, prompting them to leave their homes.
In the aftermath of the seismic activity, a significant number of people were observed on the roads, especially in the Walled city area, including Chandpole Bazaar, Badi Chaupar, and Johari Bazaar. Residents of multistory apartments opted to gather on the ground floor and vacate the buildings.
Raj Bansal, a resident of Shyam Nagar, recorded the earthquake using his CCTV, confirming the occurrence of blast-like sounds. The constant fear of further tremors prevented many from sleeping peacefully, and communication networks were busy with people checking on the well-being of their relatives and updating their safety statuses on social media.
Hospitals also experienced disruptions as staff members attending to patients had to leave the lobby and other areas during the tremors.
The impact of the earthquakes extended beyond Jaipur, with tremors being felt in nearby districts like Sikar, Dausa, Alwar, JhunJhunu, and Bharatpur. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje acknowledged the strength of the tremors in Jaipur and expressed her hope for everyone’s safety. This event marked a rare occurrence of three consecutive earthquakes with the epicenter in Jaipur
