A blast caused a huge fire at Sahitya Pharma located in Achyutapuram SEZ in Annakpalli district of Andhra Pradesh on June 30. Two casualties were reported in the fire which was caused due to explosions in the two reactors. A video showing huge flames and clouds of thick black clouds rising from Sahitya Pharma can be seen on social media.
A massive fire engulfed the factory and thick black smoke was seen as people ran outside in panic. The cause of the blast is yet to be found. In the video a team of firemen can be seen trying to extinguish the fire and carry out the rescue operations. Variety of comments started coming on Twitter where one person said every few months such incidents were happening in Andhra Pradesh. One person said Industrial growth was a myth and this was the proof of that.
A similar incident happened in Vishakapatnam on February 1, 2023. A worker had died while three others suffered burn injuries when a reactor exploded at the GMFC pharma labs in Achyutapuram pharma SEZ in Anakpalle district. The blast triggered a fire and huge smoke blew from the pharma unit. THe workers in the factory fled the spot in panic. The deceased was Rama Rao (27). The injured were shifted to a private hospital and the condition of the injured was stated stable. The Police said the fire was brought under control. On a verification of the duty chart it was found that other workers of the pharma unit were safe. The management claimed that an electrical short circuit caused the mishap. A preliminary enquiry revealed that the blast took place when methanol was transfered to the reactor.
The negligence of the management was the reason for the mishap, as high density polyethylene pipes were used for transfering the methanol instead of conductive pipes, said Inspector of Factories V, Suresh.
