In a shocking incident, a manual scavenger was mowed down by a car in broad daylight. The incident took place in Dhanukarwadi. The manual scavenger died in Kandivli, around 10 days after being mowed down. According to reports, the accident took place on June 11, when a manual scavenger was cleaning a drain and a car drove over the manhole when he was inside it.
The victim is identified as Jagveer Shamveer Yadav. He was from Budaun in Uttar Pradesh. Jagveer Shamveer Yadav died in hospital during treatment on June 21. Reports claim that the car owner and the contractor responsible for hiring the deceased have been arrested. An FIR or First Information Report has been lodged under section 304 (A), 336 and 279 in Kandivali police station.
Shocking visuals of the incidents have now surfaced on the internet and have gone viral. CCTV footage of the horrible incident shows a Hyundai i20 driving over Yadav, who was standing inside the manhole. Yadav’s brother Raj said to the media that Jagveer was the sole earning member of the family. He expressed in grief that his father being blind and one of their sisters being visually impaired, his income was crucial for the family’s well being. Further, their two other sisters are of marriageable age and Jagveer aimed to collect funds for the weddings.
Ashish Singh, who accompanied Yadav’s brother, blamed the hospital’s infrastructure for the death. He stressed that Yadav would have been alive today if he had received efficient treatment. He added that the hospital where Yadav was admitted lacked basic facilities. The hospital allegedly discharged the victim after an unsuccessful surgery, without addressing a severe lung infection that caused significant complications.
The kin of the victim said that despite their attempts to secure admission at multiple other hospitals, including KEM and Sion, he was refused owing to unavailability of beds. They further mentioned that they even approached Shatabdi hospital, but the operating doctor was not present. Later, they managed to admit him to Balaji hospital in Malad.
