Clashes and gun battle between Trinamool Congress and the BJP supporters resulted in the death of one person and injured four others during the West Bengal Panchayat Polls on Tuesday morning. The violence was reported from Gitaldaha under Dinhata Block–I in Cooch Behar district.
Babu Haque who was associated to the ruling Trinamool Congress was killed in the violence. Four persons were seriously injured in the gun battle and are undergoing treatment at a local health centre. With fresh casualties, the death toll has reached 11 in the last 19 days since the three tier Panchayat system in the state was announced on June 8.
According to eyewitnesses, clashes between the ruling and opposition parties started in Gitaldaha early in the morning. As the time passed the clashes became deadly following exchange of bullets between the two groups.
Police said that as the place of occurrence of the clashes was quite remote. The place had to be accessed through boat. This took time to bring the situation under control.
West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday had held a rally in Cooch Behar district in which she had accused the Border Security Force of intimidating voters in the villages along the border during the elections. Addressing a panchayat rally in the state, CM Banerjee said Law and order was a state subject and the Centre had no role to play in it.
With Haque’s death, Dinhata in Cooch Behar has seen the second death due to poll related violence. On June 18, the body of Shambhu Das, brother in law of a BJP candidate from the area was recovered from a jute field. A day before , the convoy of the BJP Lok Sabha member from Cooch Behar and the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs was attacked in Dinhata.
